Biography

Thomas Lindsey Burton, 82, went to be with the Lord June 22, 2006. He was born February 11, 1924, RFD Reidsville, NC, the son of the late William Sid and Margaret Waynick Burton.

Mr. Burton finished high school in Reidsville and worked several months at Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore, Maryland before entering military service during World War II.

Mr. Burton was an infantry soldier in the European Theater, entering combat on the tenth wave of the Allied invasion of France at Normandy Beach. Burton fought in all five campaigns of the European Theater, was wounded in action three times and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor.

Upon completing service in Europe in September of 1945, he returned to the United States and attended Elon University where he graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration. In September 1949, he was employed as an auditor with the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Mr. Burton retired as District Supervisor with the North Carolina Department of Revenue on January 1, 1986.

Mr. Burton maintained a private pilot’s license for 40 years. He was Past Master of Salem Masonic Lodge #289. Also, he was an active member of Burkhead United Methodist Church.

He is survived by Jo Ann Pegg Burton of the home; daughter, Joan Maluf and husband Jason of Hilliard, Ohio; son, Brad Lindsey Burton and wife Diane Stepp Burton along with their children Russell and Kaitlyn of Mills River, North Carolina.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Neal of Reidsville, NC and Lucille Taylor of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and a brother William Sidney Burton of Sanford, NC.

A funeral service will be held at Burkhead United Methodist Church at 11:00am on Monday, June 26, 2006, followed by interment in Forsyth Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 25, 2006 from 6-8pm at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Rd.
